We have been waiting for The Breadwinner to hit the big screen and couldn’t be more excited now that it’s finally happening. This Oscar-nominated Kilkenny-produced movie has really caught the attention of many and you can easily see why.
Its beautiful animation, matched with a story of resilience, determination and survival, makes it one of the movies of the year. A story not for the faint-hearted, The Breadwinner tells of a young girl called Parvana (voiced by Saara Chaudry) who lives in Kabul, in Afghanistan – a country in the Middle East under the control of the Taliban.
When her father is unfairly arrested and put in jail, Parvana must pretend to be a boy in order to feed her family. Under the constant threat of the Taliban and an impending war, Parvana must navigate under secrecy to ensure the survival and escape of her family. The Breadwinner is a powerful story about a volatile place, where a world of fear and oppression is brought to life so vividly.
Animated by Cartoon Saloon in Kilkenny (who also brought us The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea), it’s really not hard to see how this animation studio has been nominated for three Academy Awards to date. I know Star Wars will be the big draw this month but do yourself a favour and go see this one. Bring your parents (and tissues) too – you will not be sorry. BIG HIT
